3DES

Triple Data Encryption Standard

cryptomedium

3DES applies the DES cipher three times with multiple keys to stretch the life of the aging standard. It powered banking and payment systems for decades, but its small 64-bit block size enables attacks like Sweet32. NIST deprecated it and disallowed it for encryption after 2023, so systems must migrate to AES.
