HITL describes any AI workflow where a person reviews or approves the system's output before it takes effect: a human gate between the model and the consequence. It is the single most load-bearing control in most AI policies, and the first one to quietly erode when review becomes a rubber stamp. If a process claims HITL, the real question is whether the human can actually catch and stop a bad output in time.
